They move beyond the K-12 walls of Regents, excited and perhaps a bit nervous, into the future that God has in store for them. They are prepared, and they are ready. Their kindergarten buddies joined them at our final all-school chapel, bearing drawings and cards of congratulations. The unique nature of the Regents K-12 campus allows for these sweet relationships between 5 year-old kindergartners, just beginning their journey, and 18 year-old seniors, striking out on a new one. These buddies met throughout the year, including a visit by kindergartners to the School of Rhetoric, where they saw harkness tables, climbed into lockers, and gazed out of 3rd f loor library windows, guided by their buddies. This issue of Arches celebrates the Class of 2019 and highlights the precious community that f lourishes throughout our K-12 campus. Faculty award winners are chosen by their colleagues. Josh Simmons came to Regents in 2006 to teach Ancient and Classical History and Literature. He currently serves as Associate Head of SOR and continues to teach humanities courses. A F ON D FAREWELL This year’s seniors were kindergartners when Chris Knepp first came to Regents in 2006 as the 9th grade Bible teacher. In Grammar, student art integrates with their other subjects, such as mammals in 1st grade, tapestries in 4th, or still lifes that pair with a book in 5th. In Logic and Rhetoric, students use these foundations to develop and specialize their skills, Our fine arts faculty at every level want to cultivate kids’ love of the arts and help them make art at a high level; but more importantly, we want them to realize that even their ability to make the art is a gift from God. arches m ag az i ne ALU M N I S POT L IG H T WORK HA R D , T RAV E L W E L L AN INTERVIEW WITH BEN BARNES (‘03) Ben Barnes entered Regents as a second grader in August of 1992, Regents first year. He graduated in the class of 2003 and went on to receive a B.A. in English and History from TCU. Ben returned to Austin and earned his J.D. from The University of Texas in 2011. Currently residing with his wife Shelby in Los Angeles, Ben works as an attorney at Live Nation Entertainment. Ben is the son of Cindy Barnes and Greg Barnes and brother of Kelly Barnes (’06). What is your current job? What is it that you love about your field? I am an attorney at Live Nation Entertainment, one of the world’s largest music promoters and venue operators. We own, operate, and book venues and festivals of all sizes across the world and also represent major artists when they go on tour. We recently produced A Star Is Born, the 2018 film directed by Bradley Cooper. I work in the U.S. Concerts division and help support our many venues and music festivals across the country. I pursued law mostly because I needed to find a job after college! It does coincide with my skillset. I started out as a corporate attorney in private practice but then moved to SXSW in Austin, which helped put me on the trajectory I am on now. I have always been interested in the music industry, so my job now is a perfect combination of personal interest and work. What is your most recent challenging project? PAGE 18 This past spring I worked on Bottlerock, a music festival held in Napa Valley, California. A mentor taught me to be an attorney who moves business along and not one who holds it up unnecessarily. I have been able to apply his advice and practice his wisdom across the board. “ There are endless possibilities that exist to create a meaningful life. ~ Ben Barnes ” What things or people are shaping your character? We lived in NYC (both Brooklyn and Manhattan) for several years and now in Los Angeles; both of which have been transformative experiences for us personally and as a couple. It’s certainly difficult to be so far away from family but moving away from Texas has enriched our life with other experiences and friendships we otherwise wouldn’t have had. How do you look back on your years at Regents? I started at Regents during its first year at Park Hills Church off of Mopac with 16 other students. We literally had to practice football at Reed Park in Tarrytown and practice basketball at the LCRA gym! I believe we moved into the Southwest Parkway location |
a r ches m ag az i ne R E G E N TS A LUMN I N ETWORK UPDATE YEAR IN REVIEW: The Regents Alumni Network (RAN) had a great year. Thank you to many local alums who supported our Seniors by hosting dinners in their homes in March and serving as Thesis judges in May. Local alumni serve the needs of the school all year long, and we are grateful for extra hands on deck during the school year! Want to get involved in Alumni activities? Contact David Pruitt (’12) at alumni@regentsaustin.org. SAVE THE DATE: Regents Homecoming Weekend 2019. Plan to join us at the RAN BBQ before the game on Friday, October 4, 2019. We will honor the classes of 2014, 2009, and 2004 for their 5, 10, and 15- year class reunions! Want to help plan your class reunion? Please email alumni@regentsaustin.org. OUR MEMBERS: The Regents Alumni Network, formed in 2013, serves to connect alumni to each other and the extended school community. With the 66 graduates of the Class of 2019, the total Regents graduate count is 795 and is on target to reach 1000 in 2022. Find alumni network news on the Regents website and on social media. REGENTS ALUMNI NETWORK. Our community connected. my freshman year of high school and into the current Logic Hall by my junior year. I came full circle when I helped coach the Pop Warner team, Corsairs, with Coach B a few years ago. The kids practiced at Regents, so I was able to see the full transformation of Regents into what it is today! Sports were a large part of my experience at Regents (football, basketball, and track). The Europe trip was pretty memorable. I also acted in a few plays, which I am crossing my fingers do not exist in any format. Any advice for current students or alumni? I would tell current students to seek authenticity because it’s easy to “follow the herd” during the school years. I would encourage alumni to stay in touch with each other. Don’t let the years slip by without calling friends and classmates as the days are long, but the years are short. Also, remember that the many great works you read as a student weren’t assigned simply to achieve a “well rounded education” but may also provide you with clues on how to live a good life. One particular work that stands out is a story from James Joyce’s Dubliners first published in 1914. A short story included in the collection is called “The Dead.” We read it my senior year. It completely bowled me over at the time and, after re-reading it recently, I experienced the same visceral reaction to it. PAGE 19 |

She had her stage debut after years of running the technical side of productions and loved it so much that she had her second onstage role this Spring in “The Miser.” She became the first ever Independent Music Study student, which included working directly with the 6th grade Orchestra. She was a semi-finalist for UT’s forty acre scholarship. Finally, she helped establish an ongoing tradition for students coming behind her of performing a “Senior Recital.” Casey’s viola recital, held on May 21 in Knights Hall, was well attended and left many in the audience speechless. Casey is the first Regents student to be accepted to the very prestigious Butler School of Music at the University of Texas. We wish her all the very best and thank her for her service to our school and for paving the way for future Fine Arts students. PAGE 23 |

Every time we open a new script and begin a new production, our goal is to grow as individuals and as a group and to strive for excellence and understanding. In this play, we have explored themes ranging from romantic love to the love of money above all things, to duty and honor, to the consequences of employing flattery and dishonesty to get ahead.” - Betsy Nowrasteh on the SOR Spring Play, The Miser Our SOR students did a wonderful job representing the “true, good, and beautiful” in this play. They hear the Word proclaimed, receive prayers from their teachers, and have the privilege of passing their stoles to the rising seniors. The senior stoles represent servanthood, symbolic of the towel used by a Christian preparing to wash the feet of a friend. The symbolic presentation of foot washing calls each believer to live a life of self less service. They are joined on stage by their Advisor, who prays over them and presents them with precious blessings from faculty who have poured into them over the years of their journey at Regents. While we gratefully looked back at God’s provision in our lives throughout commencement weekend, we also looked expectantly forward to where He is leading, taking our cue from the Latin etymology through the old French word, commencer, meaning to begin together. These graduates will be found next fall at renowned schools across the country and even overseas.
